Incident Details:

Police Officer Patrick Fogarty, 40, was a 5-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 10th Precinct.

On July 2, 1911, Officer Fogarty approached two men on Halsted Avenue near Pearce Street.  During the confrontation, a struggle ensued between the officer and John Gay.  Gay reached for the officer’s gun and tossed it to the ground.  As they struggled on the ground, Gay was able to reach for the revolver and fatally wound Officer Fogarty.

John Gay was found guilty of manslaughter.

Officer Fogarty was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery.  He was survived by his wife, Hanna.
