Incident Details: Police Officer Thomas Tighe, 34, was a 3-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to 24th Precinct.On February 10, 1911, Officer Tighe responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence near Hastings and South Leavitt Streets.  When the officer arrived, he arrested Michael Bradshaw and they began walking towards a police patrol box.  While at the patrol box, Henry Etchingham saw his friend was under arrest and shot the officer.  Officer Tighe was transported to County Hospital where he died on March 11, 1911.

Henry Etchingham was found guilty of Officer Tighe’s murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison.  Michael Bradshaw was acquitted.

Officer Tighe was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery.  He was survived by his wife, Margaret and four minor children, Edward, Stella, Raymond and Donald.


  • Officer Thomas TIghe was survived also by his 4 children: Edward, Stella, Raymond and Donald. They were all minors at the time of their Fathers death!

  • While in Chicago I met the officer with the horse who had been named in Offiicer Tighe’s memory. What a lovely way to commemorate fallen officers!
