Officer Arthur Mutter observed three armed robbers inside a restaurant. One offender was armed with a machine gun. Officer Mutter struggled with the three offenders, attempting to gain control of the machine gun. In the altercation, one of the offenders fired two shots. The courageous officer was struck and killed. |
Reflections
Joan, I am honored to be reading your grandfathers name along with that of my grandfather, Officer Thomas J. Murphy, at tonight's annual candlelight vigil. This was the grandfather that I never met. My father was only thirteen when his father was murdered. Dad, Art Jr, had two older and two younger siblings. My grandmother never re-married and struggled to raise their five children. I am very proud of my grandfather, whose father was also a police officer. While i don't live in Chicago anymore, I am visiting soon and will be proud to show my grandchildren the police memorial and tell my grandfathers story.
