New school dedicated for fallen officer

August 30, 2007 (WLS) -- A new charter school was dedicated Thursday morning at 2916 W. 47th Street in Chicago and named in honor of a fallen Chicago police officer. The Officer Donald Marquez School is in Chicago's Brighton Park community. Marquez was killed while trying to serve a warrant to a suspect in March 2002.

The United Neighborhood Organization founded the school. The group said it wanted to name the school after someone children could emulate.
The Marquez family said the late officer would be honored.

"Over the last few years, my family and I have asked why," said Donna Marquez, sister. " We have asked, 'How could good come from such a horrible tragedy?' Today, I can tell you, this is the good." "The vision of this school resonates with all of us so deeply because we knew the heart of my father," said Alana Marquez, daughter. "He valued excellence, opportunity and education."

Former police Superintendent Cline said officer Marquez would be an inspiration to every child who passes through the school.

Reflections

Donald was a hero who will never be forgotten. As Donna and her family remember him today at his memorial, I will be thinking of them in their sorrow. God bless all of the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department.

It been almost 10 years and I cant understand why you were taken from this world. You did so much for every one around you. God Bless you. You are a beautiful soul and will live in my heart forever.

I often remember working together on the mid-nights in 006 and think of you as a good friend and devoted family man. May God keep you and bless your family.
