Police Officer Clay died on January 25, 1982, eighteen days after being attacked by a juvenile offender. On January 7, 1982, Clay encountered a student who had reportedly stolen goods from Hyde Park Academy. he detained the offender and began to search of the student's belongings. Clay recovered a .22 caliber pistol before the young man became hostile and struck him. Clay fell to the ground during the attack and was hospitalized for a knee injury. A blood clot formed in his knee which then caused a heart attack. Bilateral pulmonary embolism was the cause of death. The officer was a 25-year-veteran and was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons and brother. He also left five grandchildren. |
