Officer DeMay was injured on March 5, 1929 while patrolling the streets of Chicago on his motorcycle. DeMay was in pursuit of a speeding automobile, traveling at 35 MPH when his motorcycle slipped on the cobblestone. The slick pavement caused him to slide the length of the street car track crushing the metal of his motorcycle. The officer sustained fatal injuries to his left leg which would prohibit him from ever riding a motorcycle again. On March 7 the officer succumbed to his wounds.
