Incident Details:

Officer Young was killed on September 17,1997 during a robbery attempt in Garfield Park on the 3500 block of W. Lake Street. Young was seated in his car with a companion when 2 assailants approached the car demanded that Officer Young turn anything of value over to them.

Young told the 2 men he was a police officer and showed his badge. A fusillade of gunfire erupted and Young was shot at close range. He was Mortally wounded but still managed to fire several shots and gravely injured 1 of the offender's. The other offender, a three time ex con and career criminal also aquitted of double murder chrges, was taken to cook county hospital in a coma. He would later make a full recovery and be convicted of Officer Young's Murder.

Officer Young is survived by his wife, Gladys; his daughter, Rashida; and son, Jason.

Officer Young is buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Chicago, IL.

The offender involved in Officer Young's death was a "career criminal" with an apparent disdain for police and authority. His career started as a juvenile and lead right to his adult life being spent incarcerated. At the time of his conviction in the death of Officer Young he was sentenced to Death Row only to be communicated by the then Governor, George Ryan in 2003. Reflections

Mr. Young was like a Father to me and inspired me to get involved in Law Enforcement. Even though I’m not around much i always keep an eye out for the beautiful and lovely young family. I don't know this officer but my cousins are Chicago police officers. I could not even picture how my day would be if I found out they were shot. I am sure Officer Gregory was a great man. --Anonymous 07/03/2008
