Rank: Police Officer
District / Unit: 014 District (Shakespeare)
End of Watch: 22-Dec-1962
Incident Details:

On December 22, 1962, P.O. Paul Batson was on patrol with his partner heading eastbound on west Armitage Street.  They witnessed a white Chevrolet convertible traveling on the wrong side of Armitage at a high rate of speed, which forced the officers' vehicle into the curb. The officers gave chase, but the driver of the suspect vehicle increased his speed and refused to pull over.  As the chase ended, the driver leapt from his vehicle, raised his hands, but refused to turn around as commanded by Batson and his partner.  P.O. Batson used necessary force to subdue the driver and placed him under arrest.  During the arrest, Batson suffered a heart attack and expired.

Reflections

On April 27, 2011, I had the great privilege of attending a Gold Star Police Memorial ceremony to honor the lives of fallen officers, including my dad, Paul A. Batson. When my dad died, I was only an infant so I never had the chance to know him personally. But through the wonderful stories, photos and memories shared by my mom Elaine, sister Phyllis and brother Phil, he was brought to life, forever etched into my heart. Every day I feel my dad's presence and love with me, seeing me through every trial and struggle, every moment of glory and beauty. I am proud to know that I had a brave, wonderful man for my father, and that he died a hero and died doing what he loved to do. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to the Police Memorial, Supt. Cline, and everyone who made this glorious moment possible for me and my family. And a special thank you to my sister, Phyllis, for her never ending love and commitment to making this happen for daddy. Dad, I love you and I thank you for all the sacrifices you made for your family and the City of Chicago. Your loving daughter, Patty.
