Officer Wendell Hicks, while off-duty, learned that there was an armed robbery taking place in a parking lot. The officer took immediate police action and rushed to the scene. Officer Hicks jumped in his car automobile. After chasing the offender into an alley, Officer Hicks couragesly confronted the gunman. On this your 39th anniversary I remember your ultimate sacrifice. As a former 005th District officer I thank you for service.

I am currently researching the Chicago Police Department with intent to apply. While reading and learning of the fallen officers I encountered your comment and was motivated. I am sorry for your loss and thank you for the work your father performed. Your loss was not in vain. Your father and others like him motivate people like me to pursue this career in order to continue the work they started.

My dad is warmly remembered by his wife and daughters and his courage, love of family and humanity is shared with his 3 granddaughters, his grandson, who bears his name and his three great-grandchildren, all who have come to know and love him, as though he was still with us.
