Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s efforts to raise $4 million in order to help replace 8,000 bulletproof vests for Chicago police officers will get a funding boost through a grant from UPS.
The $7,000 grant will directly impact the initiative, “Get Behind the Vest.” Developed in 2014, the program will help pay for the high price tag of vests.
“Since 2013 there has been a 70% increase of fire-arm related police officer deaths nationally. Our officers need protection now and this grant helps make us one step closer to providing that protection,” said Phil Cline, the Executive Director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.
Chicago police officers are provided with one vest when they join the department. After that, they are responsible for purchasing any replacements. Every five years a bullet proof vest needs to be replaced due to wear from heat, moisture and storage. Vests start at $500, but replacement prices can quickly add up.
“The UPS Foundation is honored to support the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s efforts to provide finical and emotional support to the families of Chicago police officers who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. “Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community.”
