Last evening, the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Police Memorial Foundation honored five fallen heroes:
Their names were unveiled during a ceremony in the Sacrifice Area of the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. The memorial park is the premier monument in the nation dedicated to the sacrifices of law enforcement officers.
The Chicago Police Department Honor Guard was on hand to assist family members of the fallen heroes. Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy presented each a flag that was flown over Gold Star Families Memorial Park.
The five fallen officers spanned the 20th and 21st century. Some died long after the initial event due to complications from their injuries. “We never forget”. Last night’s ceremony laid proof to the mantra. Police officers, fire fighters, military personnel, and other first responders do not give up their lives. Their lives are taken from them, their families, and us, society in general. We, as a society should “never forget” those whose lives were taken. It is the least we can do.

As an old friend used to day, “It is not how these men died that matters, it is how they lived.”
Visit the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. It is located on the lake front, directly behind Soldiers Field. It is a beautiful quiet oasis in our bustling noisy city.
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is dedicated to honoring the lives of fallen Chicago Police Officers. The Foundation provides support and financial assistance to families of officers who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty. You can donate to the Foundation here.
