On September 2, 1945 Detectives Charles Brady and Det. George Hellstern only had 40 minutes left on their shift. Det. Brady was looking forward to getting home because it was his oldest son Charles’s 13th birthday. But being good detectives they saw a suspicious man outside at currency exchange at Clark and Lunt. They approached Cecil “Red” Smith and he pulled out a gun and shot both detectives. Both Detectives died from their gunshot wounds. Smith was later executed by his own robbery crew and buried in a grave in the western suburbs.

Yesterday, at the 024 District, which is the same district that his Dad worked at, Mike Brady the son of Det. Charles Brady presented a check in the amount of $10,000 for Get Behind the Vest To Commander Tom Waldera, on behalf of him and his brother Patrick “Ben” Brady. Also attending the check presentation was Jean Wenger the granddaughter of Det. Hellstern.
