January 2010

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation recognizes Cedric Brumley Sr. as its January 2010 “Officer of the Month.” On August 16, 2002 Cedric, a 004th District officer, was involved in a near fatal car accident. While responding to a call of “officer needs assistance” Brumley’s patrol car was struck by another police vehicle at the intersection of 88th and Colfax.

Officer Brumley was hospitalized for four months, two weeks of which he spent in a coma. As a result of the accident, Officer Brumley is confined to a wheelchair. The philosophy of Cedric…”Life is what you make of it. It’s not always fair, but the important thing is that when you stumble, you get up and persevere. If it’s worth having, it’s worth working for.” Officer Brumley has not become bitter or let this incident stop him from living his life. He’s stayed strong, positive and God-fearing. Cedric is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Criminology from the University of Cincinnati, but he is most proud of being a father. According to Cedric, “being a daddy is good, but being a father is even greater.” Officer Brumley is a single parent and resides in the south suburbs with his two children, Cedric Jr. (13) and Calyn (8).
