||Detective Bernard “Barney” L. Halperin, 49, was a 22-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Wabash Avenue Station. On December 20, 1957, Detective Halperin was off-duty when he responded to a robbery-in-progress. The officer arrived to the 110th block of East 73rdStreet where he found his partner, and off duty probationary police officer Young C. Hobson. When the armed robber, Thomas Gooden, realized the restaurant was surrounded, he exited and began shooting. Detective Halperin was fatally wounded. Thomas Gooden was shot by police at the scene. Officer Young C. Hobson would die in the line of duty on May 3, 1968. Detective Halperin was laid to rest West Lawn Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Nettie; and his two brothers.
