|Incident Details:||Detective Dewey Littleton, 43, was a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Detective Division.
On August 13, 1947, Detective Littleton along with 35 other police officers responded to a residence in the 3200 block of Wentworth Avenue. Otis Williams, 45, had shot his wife, Callie, 43, in their second-floor apartment. The officers stormed the building using tear gas in an attempt to apprehend Williams and rescue Callie. During the incident, Detective Littleton was fatally wounded by three shotgun pellets. Otis Williams was killed by police; his wife recovered. Tragically, Detective Littleton died at the scene.
Officer Littleton’s funeral service was held at South Shore Baptist Church and he was laid to rest in Lincoln Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and daughters, Ismay and Emalda.
