||Detective Jerome Stubig, 40, was a 16-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Detective Division – Bomb and Arson Unit. On April 14, 1969, Detective Jerome Stubig and Sergeant James Schaffer went to an apartment on the 9500 block of South Exchange. The resident of the apartment, Frank Kulak, was suspected of bombing the Goldblatt’s Department Store. Sergeant Schaffer was fatally wounded by Kulak on the back porch. Detective Stubig was fatally wounded by the gunman when he went to assist Sergeant Schaffer. The incident lasted six-hours and consisted of dozens of rounds of bullets and bombs being set-off. Four policemen were also injured from bomb blasts. Detective Stubig’s funeral mass was held at Immaculate Conception Church and he was laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and six children.
