On August 3, 1920, Detective-Sergeant McGurk was detailed to guard the payroll of the Illinois Vinegar Plant at 48th Street and Oakley Avenue. A group of armed men wearing handkerchiefs over their faces entered and ordered the sergeant to lift up his hands. Detective-Sergeant McGurk attempted to reach for his weapon when he was fatally wounded.
James Moriarty, James Ryan, and Stanley Galus were arrested. Galus was the only offender convicted. He was sentenced to life in prison.
