Detective-Sergeant Joseph Urban, 39, was assigned to the 35th Street.
On December 1, 1917, Detective-Sergeant Urban was investigating a string of neighborhood robberies. The detective-sergeant was mistaken for a burglar when he entered the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company — after hours — and was shot by an officer. Detective-Sergeant Urban was transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital where he died on December 5, 1917.
The shooting was ruled accidental.
Detective-Sergeant Urban was laid to rest in St. Adalbert Cemetery.
