||Police Officer Elijah Harris, Jr., 51, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 006 District. On July 31, 1989, Officer Harris was writing a traffic citation when a pedestrian reported that he had seen a teen with a gun, riding a white bicycle. Officer Harris spotted the offender on the 1500 block of West 79th Street, stopped him and began frisking him on his patrol car. The offender, Andrew Jordan, jumped onto the patrol car and shot the officer in the abdomen. With the help of eyewitnesses, Jordan was identified and apprehended a half hour later at his home. He was charged with aggravated battery and first-degree murder. Officer Harris was rushed to Christ Hospital and Medical Center and remained a patient there until his death on November 16, 1989. He passed away in the hospital’s intensive care unit after his condition worsened. Officer Harris’ funeral service was held at Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and he was laid to rest in Restvale Cemetery. He is survived by his children, Terry, Tonya, Daryl, and Regina; brother, Nathaniel; sister, Regina; and grandchildren, Darnell, Teonna, Corey, and LaMar.
