|Incident Details:||Police Officer Jesse Sneed, 32, was assigned to the Cottage Grove Station.
On April 7, 1928, Officer Sneed and his partner, William Franklin, saw two suspicious men in the 400 block of East 31st Street. When the officers attempted to question the men – Clarence Lewis and Ralph Banks – Lewis drew a gun and shot Officer Sneed in the heart. The two offenders fled; Officer Franklin rushed his wounded partner to Michael Reese Hospital. Officer Sneed succumbed to his injuries four days later on April 11.
A young boy witnessed the incident and led police to Clarence Lewis, 24. Police took Lewis to Officer Sneed’s bedside where the officer positively identified him as the shooter. Lewis led police to his partner, Ralph Banks.
Clarence Lewis was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Ralph Banks was acquitted.
Officer Sneed was laid to rest in Lincoln Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and children.
