|Incident Details:||Police Officer Albert Brown, 57, was assigned to the Shakespeare Avenue Station.
On July 5, 1955, Officer Brown was working at the 32nd district lockup facility. A prisoner, Charles Dean, was able to exit his cell and steal Officer Brown’s service weapon from his desk. Dean shot Officer Brown in the abdomen and then fled the lockup facility. Officer Brown succumbed to his injuries at Alexian Brothers Hospital on July 19, 1955.
Charles Dean was apprehended two days after the shooting. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled after serving 12 years. During the trial, Albert Brown Jr., died in a vehicular collision and Hattie Brown suffered a nervous breakdown and was temporarily hospitalized.
Officer Brown was laid to rest in Forest Home Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Hattie; and sons, Walter and Albert Junior (late).
