Police Officer Arthur Mutter, 44, was assigned to the Gresham Station.
On April 18, 1933, Officer Mutter was off duty when he entered a saloon on the 8000 block of South Ashland Avenue. While the officer was in the saloon, a man who had been previously ejected after fighting with two of his companions returned. Officer Mutter attempted to disarm the shooter when his two friends rushed to the shooter’s side. Officer Mutter was shot twice by one of the shooter’s friends. The brave officer was rushed to Auburn Park Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Mutter was survived by his wife and five children.
