|| Police Officer Bernie Poe, 23, was a 1-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Marquette Station. On November 8, 1957, Officer Poe saw a police officer struggling with an ex-convict at Roosevelt road and Kedzie Avenue. Officer Poe ran to the officer’s side as the ex-convict, Elijah White, attempted to disarm him. Officer Poe was trying to restrain White when the offender stole the other officer’s gun and fatally wounded Officer Poe. He was rushed to Illinois Research Hospital where succumbed to his wounds. Elijah White was later found in Michigan. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to serve 99 years in prison Officer Poe was laid to rest in Restvale Cemetery.
