|Incident Details:||Detective Charles Kraatz, 54, was a 24-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Prairie Avenue Station.
On May 6, 1953, Detective Kraatz and two other officers responded to a call regarding a man firing a gun in the hallway of an apartment building on the 700 block of East 36thStreet. The detective approached and ordered the shooter, James Knight, to lower his weapon. Knight shot Detective Kraatz three times and fatally injured him. Officers opened fire on Knight, killing him. Detective Kraatz was transported to Michael Reese Hospital where he died on May 8, 1953.
Detective Kraatz’s funeral mass was held at and he was laid to rest in Evergreen Park Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Gertrude.
