||Police Officer Charles Speaker, 58, was assigned to the Chicago Park District Police. On June 30, 1941, Officer Speaker interrupted a robbery-in-progress occurring in Jackson Park near 59 thStreet. The offender, Bernard Sawicki, 19, was holding-up a couple sitting in a car when Officer Speaker spotted him. The parolee immediately opened fire and fatally wounded the officer. Bernard Sawicki, 19, was found guilty of murdering four people, including Officer Speaker. Sawicki died in the electric chair at County Jail on January 17, 1942. Officer Speaker’s funeral mass was held at Holy Cross Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Mary; son, Joseph; and his daughter, Mrs. George Kelly.
