Police Officer Cornelius Wilson, 29, was assigned to the 003 Precinct.
On May 1, 1919, off-duty Officer Wilson spotted three men, suspected of committing armed robberies. When Officer Wilson approached the men and attempted to question them, they drew weapons and opened fire on the officer. The injured officer returned fire and fatally wounded one of the suspects. A passing motorist found Officer Wilson and attempted to transport him to a local hospital. Officer Wilson died in the citizen’s vehicle.
Herman Dykes and Dan Harlan were found guilty of murder. They were sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Wilson was laid to rest in Kentucky.
