||Police Officer Curtis Baker, 46, was a 16-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Public Transportation Unit. On June 2, 1984, Officer Baker was off duty and in plain clothes when he escorted a woman to her apartment in the Robert Taylor Homes at 4500 South Federal Street. Three men approached the pair during an alleged attempted robbery in the fourth-floor stairwell and one of the men yelled, “Hold it!” Officer Baker drew his gun from its holster, but was shot before he could fire his weapon. Officer Baker was pronounced dead on arrival at Michael Reese Hospital. The men were identified and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery: Bernard Lash, 22, alleged shooter; David Govan, 26; and Eugene Jackson, 19. Officer Baker is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
