Incident Details: Detective Daniel Quinnan, 38, was a 13-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 001 District — Vice. On September 19, 1966, Vice Detective Quinnan interrupted a robbery-in-progress occurring in a tavern near Balbo Street and Wabash Avenue. The detective intended to make a premise check, but was instead struck down by gun fire immediately upon entering the establishment. The armed robber, Paul Thetford, shot the detective in the chest and fled with $100. Detective Quinnan was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Paul Thetford, 29, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve 30-75 years in prison. Detective Quinnan’s funeral was held at St. Rita’s Church and he was laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and four sisters.
