|Incident Details:||Dennis C. Fitzgerald, 50, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Fiftieth Street Station.
On September 26, 1903, Officer Fitzgerald saw two men causing a disturbance at 44th Street and Indiana Avenue. The officer approached John Johnson and Louis Tedford and ordered them to leave the area. Tedford held the officer as Johnson removed the officer’s baton and began beating him until he lost consciousness. When Officer Fitzgerald fell to the ground, Johnson removed the officer’s service weapon and shot him. The officer was transported to Mercy Hospital where he died on January 20, 1904.
On March 5, 1904, John Johnson was found guilty and sentenced to hang. Louis Tedford was sentenced to serve 14 years in prison.
Officer Fitzgerald was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and children.
