|Incident Details:||Police Officer Earl Leonard, 32, was a 7-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Motorcycle Division.
On June 9, 1929, Officer Leonard spotted a vehicle with nine passengers near Madison Street and Laramie Avenue. The officer curbed the vehicle at curbed a speeding vehicle and questioned the occupants. When Officer Leonard attepted to arrest the driver when his friend, Patrick Joyce, shot the officer. Officer Leonard was transported to Frances Willard Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Patrick Joyce was sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Leonard was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
