Incident Details: Detective Edward Carney, 29, was assigned to the Central District.

On December 2, 1893, Detective Carney and his partner, Detective John Conway, attempted to question two suspicious men at the corner of 39th Street and Langley Avenue.  The men, A.F. Holmes and James Potter, became combative and drew two large Colt revolvers on the detectives.   The offenders assaulted Detective Conway with the gun and then shot Detective Carney.  Detective Carney suffered a gunshot wound to his leg; he died on December 8, 1893, at Chicago Hospital from blood poisoning.

Detective Carney was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.  He was survived by his wife and brother, John (CPD).
