|Incident Details:||Police Officer Edward Finnegan, 27, was assigned to the 7th District.
On March 27, 1926, Officer Finnegan arrested two men, Otto Hacker and Richard Evans, and placed them into his squad car. En route to the Brighton Park Station, Evans drew a gun and shot the officer. The two then attempted to throw the officer out of the vehicle. Tragically, the officer’s uniform became stuck to the vehicle’s running board. The officer was dragged along the road before he fell in front of the Brighton Park Station. Officer Finnegan died at the scene.
Richard Evans was found guilty and hanged. Otto Hacker was acquitted in 1927.
Officer Finnegan was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
