Incident Details: Police Officer Erwin Jackson, 33, was a 3-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to Task Force Area #4. On April 24, 1969, Officer Jackson and his partner responded to a “man with a gun” call. An off-duty police officer was visiting a tavern located in the 3300 block of West Roosevelt Road when he notified police that a man with a gun was disturbing patrons. When the officers arrived to the scene, they witnessed Bernard Berry, 23, holding a gun in his hand. Officer Jackson’s partner attempted to disarm Berry when a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the officer’s gun accidentally discharged and fatally wounded Officer Jackson. Officer Jackson succumbed to his injuries at Cook County Hospital. Bernard Barry, an ex-convict, was charged with attempted murder of a policeman and unlawful use of a weapon. Officer Jackson was survived by his wife, Caroline, and children, Darrell, Stephanie, and Kimberly. He was a U.S. Marine veteran
