|Incident Details:||Police Officer George Freeman was assigned to the Wabash Avenue Station.
On April 26, 1947, Officer Freeman was walking his beat when he was fatally assaulted on the 500 East block of 47th Street. The assailant struck the officer and began kicking him in the head and the body as he lay on the sidewalk. A citizen from a nearby tavern witnessed the incident and rushed to Officer Freeman’s side. The alleged assailant, Edward Weaver, attempted to flea the scene, but was held by the civilian. Officer Freeman succumbed to his injuries.
Edward Weaver was acquitted.
Officer Freeman was laid to rest in Lincoln Cemetery.
