|Incident Details:||Police Officer George Bryja, 45, was a U.S. Marine and a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 022 District.
On July, 27, 1986, Officer Bryja and his son were awakened when his wife set off the family’s car alarm to warn of trouble. Officer Bryja’s wife witnessed two arsonists trying to set a nearby garage on fire after vandalizing it. The officer and his son, 18, pursued the men on foot for four blocks before losing them. When they returned to their home, Officer Bryja was sweating profusely and complaining of chest pains before collapsing. He died en route to Holy Cross Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, daughter and son. Officer Bryja’s son later became a Chicago police officer.
