Police Officer George Thompson, 32, was assigned to the Cottage Grove Station.

On November 14, 1925, Officer Thompson and his partner, Napoleon Sutton, were searching for two armed men who had threatened to murder a woman.  The officers found the men – Floyd Battles and Claude Huddelston — on 30th Street near Dearborn Street.  With their weapons drawn, the officers approached the suspects and ordered them to put their hands up.  Battles, an ex-convict, shot Officer Thompson through his overcoat pocket.  Officer Sutton returned fire and shot Battles while his accomplice, Huddelston, jumped on the officer’s back before fleeing.  Officer Sutton chased Huddelston and arrested him.  Officer Sutton died en route to a local hospital.

Claude Huddelston was arrested, but later acquitted.

Officer Thompson was laid to rest in Mount Glenwood Memorial Garden Cemetery.
