||Police Officer Irma C. Ruiz, 40, was a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to Area 4–Youth Division.On September 22, 1988, Officer Irma Ruiz and her partner, Officer Jaglowski, 38, were at Moses Montefiore School located in the 1300 block of South Ashland Avenue. The partners were in the school dealing with a juvenile when a gunman nearby went on a shooting rampage near 13thStreet and Ashland Avenue. The gunman, Clem Henderson, entered an auto parts and shot the owner and an employee. Then, Henderson walked over to the school and approached a group of sanitation and custodial workers, fatally wounding two of them. A witness rushed into the school and told the officers about the situation outside. Both officers ran towards the door. When Officer Jaglowski reached the entrance with Officer Ruiz behind him, Henderson opened fire. Officer Jaglowski suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officer Ruiz suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Officer Jaglowski fatally wounded Henderson. Officer Ruiz succumbed to her injuries at the scene.Officer Ruiz’s funeral mass was held at Christ the King Catholic Church and she was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Peter; and children, Peter, John, Phillip, and Irma.
