||Police Officer Irwin Hayden, 52, was a 23-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Traffic Division. On August 10, 1971, Officer Hayden and pilot, David Demarest were flying in WGN-radio’s traffic helicopter when it crashed. Due to weather conditions, the helicopter struck a utility pole and high-voltage power lines before falling into a baseball field in Bellwood. Officer Hayden had replaced Officer Leonard Baldy after he died in 1960. Officer Hayden’s funeral mass was held at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, Thomas, and daughters, Patty and Peggy.
