|Incident Details:||Detective James Keefe, 43, assigned to the Maxwell Street Station -- Detective Division.
On January 5, 1905, Detective Keefe along with four other officers attempted to execute arrest warrants on Frank Gagen and Harry Feinberg inside of Edward Gagen’s home. The four officers staked out the front door while Officer Keefe went to the back entrance. Officer Keefe entered through a backdoor and was fatally wounded when he opened a bedroom door. A gun battle then ensued between the other officers and the offenders. Harry Feinberg was fatally wounded. An officer suffered minor injuries. Detective Keefe succumbed to his injuries at Mercy Hospital.
Frank Gagen was found guilty of Officer Keefe’s death and sentenced to life in prison. Edward Gagen was found guilty of robbery.
Detective Keefe was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. He was survived by his wife.
