||Police Officer James Mitchell, 24, was an 8-month veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Morgan Park Station. On April 14, 1957, Officer Mitchell and his partner arrested Lee Foster. Foster was wanted for firing off a gun. During the arrest, a struggle ensued and Foster was able to disarm Officer Mitchell’s partner. As the two struggled for the weapon, it discharged and fatally wounded Officer Mitchell. Officer Mitchell died before arriving to Roseland Hospital. Lee Foster was charged with Officer Mitchell’s murder. Officer Mitchell was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery. He is survived by his parents and wife.
