|Incident Details:||Police Officer Jesse Gilman, 56, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 38th Precinct.
On December 23, 1910, Officer Gilman and his partner, Officer William Burns were assigned to arrest Gregori Gracio. Gracio was wanted for attempting to shoot and kill his former employer. At approximately 6:00 p.m., the officers spotted Gracio and pursued him on foot. Gracio opened fire and shot Officer Gilman on Franklin Street between Ontario and Ohio Streets. The officer collapsed and his partner pursued Gracio to Ontario and Cass Streets where the offender was fatally wounded. Officer Gilman died at Passavant Hospital on December 24.
Officer Gilman’s funeral was held at his residence and he was laid to rest in Mount Olive Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Florence; and children Mabel, Jessie, and Mrs. Edward Baynes.
