Police Officer John Byrnes, 43, was a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Englewood District.
On September 30, 1926, Officer Byrnes and his partner, William Cannon, were dispatched to investigate robbers attempting to enter a garage near 61st and Halsted Streets. When the officers drove into the alley where the garage was located, the offenders immediately opened fire. Officer Cannon was uninjured, but Officer Byrnes was fatally wounded. He was transported to St. Bernard Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Officer Byrnes was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
