||Police Officer John Freichel, 42, was a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Marquette Station. On August 23, 1936, Officer Freichel was shot by Sam La Sasso, an ex-convict, after exiting a tavern on the 700 South block of Kedzie Avenue. Despite being injured, the officer attempted to chase La Sasso before collapsing. La Sasso ran to Lexington Street and Kedzie Avenue where he turned the gun on himself, and committed suicide. Officer Freichel was transported to Bethany Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Freichel was survived by his wife and daughter.
