Incident Details: Police Officer John J. Gilhooly Jr., 21, was a 1-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Wabash Street Station. On November 13, 1969, Officer John Gilhooly and his partner, Officer Francis Rappaport, 32, were dispatched to investigate a false call. After the officers spoke to the lying complainant, they began searching for the suspect. As the officers walked through a gangway, both of them were shot by a sniper–Spurgeon Winters Jr., 19. Winters, a Black Panther, was hiding underneath a porch on the 5800 block of S. King Drive. Officer Gilhooly was transported to Billings Hospital where he died on November 14. Officer Gilhooly’s funeral mass was held at St. Ethelreda Church and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemeter. He is survived by his father, John (CPD); and siblings, Francis and Patricia.
