|Incident Details:||Police Officer John McDermott, 36, was an 11-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 029 Precinct.
On April 11, 1900, Officer McDermott was fatally injured when his service weapon accidentally discharged as he fell down the stairs. The officer's sister, Mary, found him unconscious at the bottom of the family stairwell with a gunshot wound to the temple. The officer was transported to Cook County Hospital where he later died.
Officer McDermott was survived by his sister, Mary; and his brother, William.
