|Incident Details:||Police Officer John O'Connell was assigned to the 21st Precinct.
On April 16, 1911, Officer John O'Connell and his partner, Officer William Sheehan, attempted to disperse a group of approximately 30 people from Halsted and Taylor Streets. The mob became angry and attacked the officers as they were requesting assistance on a police call box. Officer O'Connell was severely beaten and transported to Cook County Hospital. The officer died on November 20, 1911.
Frank Canesi was arrested in connection to Officer O'Connell's death, but was later acquitted.
Officer O'Connell was survived by his wife, Mamie; children, John, Mary, Ellen, Lillian, and Margaret; and his brother, Sergeant Joseph (CPD).
