|Incident Details:||Police Officer John O’Donnell, 30, was assigned to the Cragin Station.
On August 9, 1942, Officer O’Donnell and his partner, Officer John Ryan, responded to the 3800 block of North Paulina Avenue in their patrol wagon. The officers were assisting two injured civilians to a local hospital when they were struck by a drunk driver. The driver, George Peterson, 43, was intoxicated and speeding when he struck the two officers and two civilians.
George Peterson was charged with manslaughter.
Officer O’Donnell’s funeral mass was held at St. John Bosco Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Alice, and daughter, Denise Marie.
