|| Police Officer John Quirk, 23, was a 2-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Shakespeare Avenue Station. On January 13, 1958, Officer Quirk was off duty and sitting in his parked car with his date. Two armed male offenders entered the vehicle and robbed the couple. Officer Quirk attempted to gain control and defend the young woman when he was fatally wounded. Officer Quirk died at the scene. George Starcevic, 23, was sentenced to 199 years for the officer’s murder, plus 25 years to life for one robbery, and 10 years to life on each of three other robberies. Nicholas La Papa, 20, was sentenced to life in prison for Officer Quirk’s murder and to 10 years for each of the four robberies he committed. Officer Quirk’s funeral was held at Our Lady of Angels Church and he was laid to rest in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. He was survived by his parents.
