|Incident Details:||Police Officer John Ryan, 28, was a 7-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Hudson Avenue Station.
On February 24, 1930, Officer Ryan was at a tavern locating in the 3300 block of West Armitage Avenue. Peter Pace approached the officer and offered him homemade wine. When the officer refused to accept the drink, a struggle ensued. Pace grabbed Officer Ryan’s gun and shot him twice in the abdomen. Officer Ryan succumbed to his injuries.
Peter Pace, 23, was found guilty and sentenced to 199 years in prison.
Officer Ryan was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Hannah; and children, Joseph, Marie, Adelaide, and Jackie.
