|Incident Details:||Police Officer John Vondruska, 32, was assigned to the Fillmore Station.
On January 1, 1931, Officer Vondruska was on assignment to help prevent robberies at the Yellow Cab Company located at Leamington Avenue and Flannery Street. On New Years Day, three armed robbers entered the facility with the intent of stealing 8,000 dollars. One of the intruders, armed with a machine gun, opened fire on the officer. A cab driver, William Smith, heard the gunshots and was shot twice when he ran to assist the wounded officer. William Smith survived the incident. Officer Vondruska succumbed to his injuries.
Mike Marcurio, 24, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Officer Vondruska was laid to rest in St. Adalbert Cemetery.
